“The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration” was adopted in a conference organized in Marrakech, a city of Morocco on 10 December 2018 with the participation of 164 countries, members of the United Nations.
At the Global Compact for Migration Conference where Mr. Süleyman SOYLU, our Minister of Interior, participated as the representative of our country, a framework of international cooperation on migration was drawn and a consensus was reached on cooperation-based global solutions and responsibility-sharing. In the text, which contains 10 basic principles based on universal human rights and fundamental freedoms, 23 targets on migration management were determined. This agreement is not an international agreement and legally- binding and therefore does not constitute a liability in terms of domestic or international law. On the other hand, it is important for our country as it is a document supporting the works of our country in the field of migration management and our international cooperation.
Thousands of irregular migrants, who took a dangerous road by leaving their country in hopes of a safe life, lost their lives on that road or became victims of human trafficking. In order to prevent human rights violations against asylum seekers; the fact that the cooperation between source countries for migration, the countries of transit and destination countries is essential has been once again emphasized with the text of “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration”. In the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, our country has taken a decisive step towards the ongoing migration crisis by fulfilling its responsibility for the protection of human rights of migrants.
